AMERICAN PIE AND THE MAN FROM GALILEE

Recently I was reminded of the song, "Put Your Hand in the Hand of the Man" (1971). I've heard it many times over the years, but never paid attention to the lyrics-- not beyond the chorus. And not until I heard it mentioned in a sermon. I listen to the song as lectio Divina. I'm struck by the line that says, "it causes me shame that we're not the people we should be." It causes me shame to think that my family (including me) weren't the people we should have been. And at the same time, we are just as God made us. And God loves us. It's a paradox.

As I update this post on this Sunday morning, miners trapped in Laos caves are still missing, the American government is threatening to bull-doze the Statue of Liberty, and another song comes to mind, Bye Bye American Pie. I hope it's not a bad sign. But I think it is.

Lord have mercy.
