PINK SPRING MOON
Tonight we will have a Pink Spring Moon! The first super moon of the season.
The song I was going to use for this Blog post was "Bad Moon Rising," by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR). The tune is catchy and fun but the images are dark and threatening. I thought the CCR song fit well with the bad Covid-19 numbers rising in my country and around the world.
But in the end I worried the song was too negative for a sweet pink moon. So I decided against it. Instead, I found a completely different song from the other side of the world. It was brand new to me. Very old. Unusual. And particularly beautiful. It's odd that an ancient song like this one could feel so new, fresh, and full of hope. "Late have I loved you, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new." (St. Augustine). To me it feels like how a pink moon would sound.
Then after a chat with Fr. Norm before a Saturday Zoom Gathering at St. Basil's, I decided to put the song "Bad Moon Rising" back in this post. Why? Because Fr. Norm essentially confirmed my instincts about the song. He said, "We ARE in dark and threatening times. Bad Moon Rising may not be a hopeful choice, but it's appropriate." So I put it back in.
I think together both songs create a good balance in these times.
So what is a Pink Moon?
"The name Pink Moon comes from one of the first spring flowers, Wild Ground Phlox, also known as Moss Phlox (Phlox subulata) as they cover the ground like a pink blanket. These brightly-colored flowers are native to North America, and they often bloom around the time of April's Full Moon." (Wikipedia)
Tonight I will be watching for this Spring Pink Moon. I'm so excited to see if it will REALLY be pink.
While I watch and wait on my balcony in Scarborough for the Pink Moon to rise tonight, I will be listening to (and praying with) the songs and psalms below.
Psalm 8:3 - "When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained."
Psalm 136:9 - "The moon and stars to rule by night, For God's loving kindness is everlasting."
If you're reading this post after the Pink Moon, not to worry.
Every night is a good night to look up at the sky and celebrate.
Cb
Amen!
